Senator Diket Plang of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Plateau Central has cautioned politicians against attempting to influence the 2027 Plateau State gubernatorial election from outside the state. He emphasized that the people of Plateau must be allowed to freely choose their governor, stressing that external interference would undermine the state's political independence and leadership role in the Middle Belt. This statement was made in Jos while responding to questions on political developments ahead of the 2027 elections.
Mr. Plang, who chairs the Senate Committee on Employment, Labour and Productivity, highlighted the importance of allowing Plateau voters to make their own choice. He noted that it would be unfair for anyone to think that someone from outside the state could decide who becomes the governor. According to him, this would lead to a loss of honor and leadership in the region. He urged political stakeholders, traditional leaders, and residents to ensure that the 2027 election reflects the choice of Plateau voters and that elected officials remain accountable to the people.
The senator also warned politicians against making over-ambitious political claims, stating that voters would punish those who approach the electorate with arrogance or disrespect. When asked if his comments were directed at the Nyesom Wike-led Rainbow Coalition, which has been involved in opposition political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, Mr. Plang claimed he was not familiar with the group. He emphasized that any politician who believes the leadership of Plateau can be determined by interests outside the state would be making a serious political miscalculation.
Mr. Plang expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu would win a second term in 2027, describing the administration's policies as "futuristic." He noted that the difficulties associated with the early phase of the administration should not be interpreted as failure, likening them to the challenges governors often face at the beginning of their tenure. He dismissed emerging opposition alliances against Mr. Tinubu as a collection of competing regional and ethnic interests that would struggle to maintain a united front as the election approaches.
On the conduct of the 2027 elections, Mr. Plang identified security, electoral preparedness, and political conduct as key conditions for a credible process. He stressed that insecurity must be addressed to enable citizens to participate freely. Additionally, the Independent National Electoral Commission must ensure adequate electoral materials and logistics to strengthen confidence in the process.
The senator urged politicians to campaign peacefully and avoid language that could deepen divisions among communities. He outlined three critical requirements for a successful election: security, a transparent electoral process, and responsible political conduct. According to him, Nigerian voters have become increasingly politically conscious and would not hesitate to reject politicians they consider arrogant or disrespectful at the polls.
Mr. Plang's comments reflect the concerns of many Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections. As politicians begin to position themselves for the polls, the issue of external influence and electoral credibility remains a major challenge. The senator's call for a free and fair election process is a reminder of the importance of allowing voters to make informed choices without undue influence.
