The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has emphasized the importance of a transparent and credible election in 2027 to prevent conflict in Nigeria. He made this statement in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on a pre-election fact-finding mission. The mission aimed to assess Nigeria's preparedness for the 2027 general elections and the current political atmosphere.

The ECOWAS delegation, led by former Vice-President of Sierra Leone, Victor Bockarie Foe, included Francess Piage Alghali, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, and other representatives. They were briefed by the ADC leadership on concerns regarding the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) preparedness and commitment to free and fair elections. The ADC also expressed worries about government control over state institutions, including the judiciary and INEC, and potential threats of violence.

Senator Mark highlighted that Nigeria's elections have significant implications for the stability of the West African region and global attention. He stressed that all stakeholders must work together to ensure a free, fair, and transparent electoral process. Mark also emphasized the ADC's commitment to peaceful elections and requested ECOWAS to insist on credible elections in Nigeria.

The ADC leadership, through its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, conveyed the party's concerns to the ECOWAS delegation. They urged ECOWAS to convey to the Federal Government and INEC the need to avoid actions that could lead to a crisis in Nigeria. The party's concerns will be reported to the regional body by the Head of Mission, Victor Bockarie Foe.

Foe emphasized the importance of peace and stability in Nigeria to the entire West African region. He promised to report the concerns of the ADC and other stakeholders to ECOWAS. The mission's findings will likely contribute to ECOWAS's efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.

The ADC's call for transparent elections aligns with ECOWAS's Conflict Prevention Framework. The framework aims to prevent conflicts in the region through proactive measures. Nigeria's 2027 general elections are critical to the country's stability and the region's overall peace.

The meeting between the ADC and ECOWAS delegation highlights the significance of international cooperation in promoting peace and stability in West Africa. The two parties share a common goal of ensuring that Nigeria's 2027 elections are free, fair, and transparent.
