The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has announced its intention to contest all elective positions in the 2027 general elections. National Chairman of the party, Senator Cleopas Moses Zuweghe, made this statement at a news conference in Abuja. The party will field candidates for the presidential, senatorial, House of Representatives, governorship, and State House of Assembly elections. This move marks a significant step in the party's preparations for the upcoming elections.
According to Senator Zuweghe, the party's National Executive Committee, NEC, will meet on October 20 to ratify key decisions ahead of the elections. On the same date, the party will inaugurate its Presidential Campaign Council as part of efforts to strengthen its preparations for the 2027 elections. The council will play a crucial role in coordinating mobilisation, public communication, and engagement with voters across the country.
The NDC's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, are expected to play key roles in the campaign council. They will nominate key campaign officials, including the Director-General, spokesperson, and heads of other departments, in consultation with the party leadership. This move is seen as a strategic effort to ensure a strong campaign.
Senator Zuweghe emphasised the importance of electoral credibility, calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, security agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure that votes are counted and results reflect the wishes of the electorate. The party is identifying members to serve as polling and collation agents to monitor the elections and protect its interests.
The chairman urged security and intelligence agencies to remain neutral and called on President Bola Tinubu to place national stability above personal political interests. Citing former President Goodluck Jonathan as an example, he urged political leaders to put the country's interest first. This appeal is seen as a call for fairness and transparency in the electoral process.
Zuweghe also warned against the creation of fake support groups allegedly intended to undermine the party. He thanked young Nigerians and other supporters who had formed groups to support the NDC and its candidates, urging them to remain vigilant. The Chairman directed state and local government chairmen to work with candidates and other stakeholders to compile lists of election agents.
The NDC maintains that it will defend its electoral interests within the law before, during, and after the elections. The party expressed confidence in its preparations under the slogan, “Nigeria Must Work Again.” With these developments, the NDC appears to be gearing up for a strong showing in the 2027 elections.
