The Nigerian Advocacy for Good Governance Alliance (NAGA-Diaspora) has called on Nigerians to thoroughly scrutinise the economic records and policy positions of presidential candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a statement, the group emphasised the need for voters to pay close attention to candidates' stances on crucial economic issues. This includes petrol subsidy and foreign exchange reforms, which have significantly impacted the country's economic landscape.
NAGA-Diaspora's Global Coordinator, Tope Adesipo, and Secretary, Ajede Oluwaseun, highlighted that the removal of petrol subsidy and naira depreciation have contributed to the current cost-of-living pressures in Nigeria. The group urged voters to seek clear explanations from candidates on how their proposed policies would address pressing economic challenges such as inflation, household costs, production, and fiscal stability. This, they believe, will enable voters to make informed decisions.
The group noted that major presidential contenders have taken different positions on aspects of economic reforms. For instance, President Bola Tinubu and Peter Obi have supported the removal of petrol subsidy. Conversely, Atiku Abubakar has recently advocated for the restoration of a targeted subsidy. Public records also show that Obi has supported subsidy removal but argued for a more gradual and organised implementation.
NAGA-Diaspora stressed that voters should examine not only the current campaign promises of candidates but also how their positions have evolved over time. The group cautioned that a change in language does not necessarily constitute a change in record. They urged Nigerians to determine whether changes in policy positions represent substantive alternatives or merely shifts in campaign messaging.
The group called on civil society organisations, youth groups, professional bodies, and registered voters to demand clear answers from candidates on their previous positions, proposed alternatives, and the likely implications of their economic programmes. NAGA-Diaspora posed three critical questions for voters to consider: who supported policies associated with the current economic pressures; who had a documented alternative, including on subsidy; and whether proposed alternatives would remain in place after the election.
