The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has announced plans to mobilize 4,000 social media influencers to showcase the Federal Government's infrastructure projects nationwide. This initiative aims to communicate the government's achievements to Nigerians, particularly young people who increasingly rely on social media for information. Umahi made this disclosure on September 22, in Abuja, while receiving a report from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on its inspection of federal road projects.

The proposed influencer network is linked to the 2027 general elections, with the government seeking to present its infrastructure record to Nigerians. According to Umahi, the administration has enough projects nationwide to campaign on, with various construction sites across the country. The minister emphasized the need to "fight this social media war" and launch the influencer network to tell the government's stories.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) inspected federal road projects across Kano, Jigawa, Kaduna, and Sokoto states, including major routes such as the Kano-Maiduguri Road and Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road. The students raised safety concerns around tertiary institutions and recommended a pedestrian bridge near the Federal Co-operative College in Kaduna. Umahi assured that the ministry would consider pedestrian bridges and access roads around university campuses in future infrastructure projects.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project is also underway, with a 105-kilometer paved section expected to be completed by November 2026. However, Umahi raised concerns about vandalism and motorists entering restricted construction areas, which has resulted in damage to materials and infrastructure.

The proposed influencer network could provide the government with a larger digital audience for presenting its infrastructure projects, particularly at a time when political parties and politicians are preparing for the 2027 election cycle. However, details about the recruitment, payment, and selection of the influencers have not been disclosed.

The initiative has sparked interest, with many Nigerians likely to see content creators showcasing new federal road, bridge, or highway projects on social media platforms like TikTok or YouTube. The government's strategy aims to reach young people and present its achievements in a more engaging and accessible way.

As the 2027 general elections approach, the Federal Government's plan to mobilize 4,000 social media influencers is seen as a strategic move to communicate its infrastructure record and campaign on its achievements. The success of this initiative remains to be seen, as Nigerians await more information on the recruitment and implementation process.
