Barrister Imamudeen Ahmed Talba, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for Yobe North Senatorial District, has vowed to unseat Senator Ahmad Lawan in the 2027 general election. Talba made this statement during an interview with journalists at the inauguration of the party's Unified Campaign Council and the commissioning of its new state secretariat in Damaturu. He cited the people's desire for change after years of representation by Lawan as the reason for his decision to contest.
According to Talba, he was initially not interested in politics but was persuaded by the people from his district to contest the seat. He stated that the people had expressed a desire for a new representative who would bring fresh ideas and address the challenges confronting the senatorial district. Talba identified poverty, unemployment, poor infrastructure, and inadequate educational opportunities as some of the key challenges facing Yobe North.
The ADC candidate outlined his priorities if elected, including economic development, agriculture, and infrastructure. He plans to support farmers, revive economic activities, and attract federal government intervention to the senatorial district. Talba also called for the rehabilitation of the Nguru-Kano railway, which he believes could boost the movement of agricultural produce and livestock and revive economic activities in the area.
Talba further suggested that the Northern Nigeria Meat Factory in Nguru should be revived and an agricultural development framework previously studied with Korean partners should be revisited. He stated that if elected, he would work on the economic development framework for the zone and the state. Additionally, he would identify projects requiring federal intervention and pursue them, while also engaging the state government on matters within its responsibility.
On healthcare, Talba expressed concern about kidney-related health challenges affecting communities in the senatorial district. He stated that research had been conducted into the causes of the disease, but more action was needed to address the problem. Talba promised to push for the provision of diagnostic and dialysis facilities in Nguru, Gashua, and other areas if elected.
The state leader of the ADC, Alhaji Adamu Maina Waziri, announced that the party had inaugurated a 57-member Unified Campaign Council to coordinate its campaigns for the 2027 elections. The council will oversee campaigns for the presidential, governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly elections in Yobe State.
Talba emphasized that his decision to contest was motivated by his desire to serve the people, not for personal gain. He expressed his commitment to working for the betterment of his constituents and the state as a whole. With his vision for economic development, infrastructure, and healthcare, Talba is poised to present a strong challenge to Senator Ahmad Lawan in the 2027 election.
