The Accord Party's governorship candidate in Ogun State, Alhaji Agbongboakala Olaniyi Okewole, has expressed confidence that the party will replicate its recent electoral success in Osun State in the 2027 Ogun governorship election. Okewole made this declaration in Abeokuta while unveiling the party's 2027 governorship campaign council and flag-off of the "Ogun Lighting Project". This initiative aims to install 300 solar-powered streetlights in rural communities across the state's three senatorial districts.
The Osun governorship election, held on August 15, 2026, saw incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of Accord win with 511,067 votes, ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes. Okewole cited this outcome as evidence that political change is possible, saying, "Come February 2026, Ogun people are prepared. We will replicate what happened in Osun, and we will do it well." He emphasized that the party is prepared to challenge the ruling APC.
Okewole criticized the current APC government in Ogun, stating that residents are tired of its perceived insensitivity and unresponsiveness to their needs. He noted that the people have lost trust in the government's ability to deliver on its promises. According to Okewole, his campaign will focus on presenting alternative policies rather than relying on inducements, saying, "We are campaigning to the conscience and hearts of Ogun people because we do not intend to commodify any Ogun indigene."
The Accord candidate outlined his policy agenda, promising to launch "Operation No Pothole" on the first day of his administration. This initiative aims to repair roads across the state, regardless of whether they are under state or federal jurisdiction. Okewole emphasized that his government will not wait for the Federal Government to take action, saying, "There are no federal people. Everyone who plies a road in Ogun State is either an Ogun resident or a visitor."
Earlier, the state chairman of Accord, Hon. Oke Rotimi Michael, explained that the "Ogun Lighting Project" is designed to address infrastructure gaps in rural communities. The pilot project will provide 100 solar streetlights to selected communities in each of Ogun's three senatorial districts, making 300 installations in all. Michael described the initiative as a pilot scheme, which could be expanded to 1,000 solar streetlights in the future.
The Accord Party also honored and empowered retired Deputy Superintendent of Traffic Anifa Bello Abiodun, popularly known as "Aunty Anifa," for her exceptional service and diligence during her 35-year career. The party presented her with a deep freezer, a plaque of honour, and a cash gift. Okewole will serve as chairman of the party's 2027 governorship campaign council, while Oke will be vice-chairman.
The Accord Party's campaign council has been set up, with Alhaji Tunji Azeez named Director-General and Hon. Dasaolu Babatunde as Deputy Director-General. With this development, the party is set to intensify its campaign efforts in Ogun State, ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
