The US Navy had its most catastrophic accidents in a decade in 2026, with a total of 16 aircraft and 11 maritime incidents classified as Category "A". These incidents resulted in significant damage to equipment and substantial financial losses. According to the US Navy's definition, Category "A" incidents involve damage to an aircraft or its destruction valued at $2.5 million or more, or resulting in fatalities or permanent total disability.

The incidents occurred during the Iran War, which began on February 28, following President Donald Trump's launch of Operation "Eternal Fury". One notable incident involved the crash of an MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter, belonging to the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier, in the Arabian Sea. The helicopter made an emergency landing, but one crew member was reported missing and later declared dead, while the other three were rescued.

A significant incident involved a major non-combat fire on board the USS Gerald R. Ford, the world's largest aircraft carrier, on March 12. The fire broke out in the main laundry room while the ship was operating in the Red Sea in support of Operation "Eternal Fury". The incident resulted in injuries to three sailors, one of whom was airlifted to receive medical treatment. It took over 30 hours to extinguish the fire, which damaged the living quarters of over 600 sailors.

In addition to combat-related incidents, there were other accidents that occurred far from combat operations. On September 28, six sailors and two pilots were injured in an incident involving an E/A-18G Growler aircraft landing on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier. The incident occurred off the coast of Virginia when a landing gear malfunction forced the pilots to eject.

Another incident involved an F/A-18F Super Hornet aircraft that suffered a fire in its left engine during a routine training mission over the Naval Air Station Fallon in Nevada on July 1. The crew managed to land the aircraft safely, and no injuries were reported. Furthermore, two EA-18G Growler aircraft crashed during an air show at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho in May.

The two EA-18G Growler aircraft that crashed belonged to the Electronic Attack Squadron 129, based on Whidbey Island, Washington. Fortunately, all four crew members ejected safely, and video footage showed them using parachutes to land. The incident occurred approximately 50 miles from the base.

The US Navy's worst year for catastrophic accidents in a decade was marked by a series of unfortunate events that highlighted the risks and challenges faced by military personnel. The incidents resulted in significant damage, loss of life, and injuries, emphasizing the importance of safety protocols and rigorous training.
