The Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria, COSROPIN, has organized a Veterans' 9-Hole Golf Kitty Competition in Abuja to mark this year's United Nations International Day for Older Persons. The event was held in collaboration with TYB International Golf Resort and Country Club. This is the third consecutive year that COSROPIN and TYB Golf Club have partnered to celebrate older persons through golf.
The President of COSROPIN, Senator Eze Ajoku, OFR, expressed delight that the partnership has become an annual event, saying it promotes healthy ageing and social security for older persons. He emphasized that COSROPIN's concern is not just that people live long, but that they live those additional years in good health, with dignity, independence, and happiness. Senator Ajoku stated that golf provides an opportunity for older persons to remain physically active, mentally alert, and socially connected.
The theme of this year's event, "Longevity and Improved Systems," is particularly relevant to COSROPIN's work, Senator Ajoku said. He stressed that as people live longer, the systems that support them must also improve, including healthcare, pension administration, social protection, recreational facilities, and community support systems. COSROPIN continues to advocate for policies and programs that make ageing in Nigeria a more dignified and fulfilling experience.
Senator Ajoku appreciated the former Captain of TYB Golf Club, Major General Sunday Jiya, for sponsoring the competition and the current Captain, Brigadier General Nicholas Ashinze, for approving the event. The President of COSROPIN also expressed gratitude to the entire leadership of TYB Golf Club for their support. Brigadier General Ashinze commended COSROPIN for the annual golf tournament and expressed the Club's continuous support towards realizing its objectives.
Participants at the golf competition described the event as a welcomed development in promoting healthy living among senior citizens. The Competition Secretary, TYB Golf 2026 Competition, David Gabriel, commended COSROPIN for the annual golf tournament and applauded all participants. He said the Club is open to interested members of COSROPIN towards strengthening the partnership between the two organizations.
The Master Ceremony of the Golf Competition, Victor Garba, described the event as a welcomed development for senior citizens to exercise themselves and socialize, promoting healthy ageing. He commended COSROPIN for sustaining the golf competition over the last three years and advised senior citizens to develop an interest in golf and regular exercise for healthy living.
The highpoint of the golf competition was the presentation of prizes to winners and participants. COSROPIN's advocacy for social security for older persons is an ongoing effort, with the organization pushing for policies and programs that promote healthy ageing and dignity for older persons in Nigeria. The event demonstrated the importance of partnerships between organizations in promoting the welfare of older persons.
