The 2026 edition of the Ghana Energy Awards has officially been launched in Accra, with nominations now open for individuals, companies, and institutions that have made significant contributions to Ghana's energy sector. This year's theme is "A Decade of Redefining Excellence." The awards, which have been recognising excellence, innovation, and leadership in the energy sector since 2017, cover key areas including power, petroleum, renewable energy, and leadership.
The 2026 edition will feature both competitive and non-competitive awards to recognise individuals and institutions for their contributions to the sector. The main awards ceremony is scheduled for November at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra. Nominations are open from September 30 and will close on October 30, with shortlisted nominees expected to be announced in November.
Speaking at the launch, Event Director of the Ghana Energy Awards, Ing. Henry Teinor, emphasised the organisers' commitment to ensuring that deserving contributions are identified and recognised based on merit. He highlighted that credibility and integrity remain central to the awards, with the assessment process strengthened through collaboration with industry experts, technical professionals, and independent validators.
Ing. Teinor also announced the introduction of an integrated awards management system designed to support the application, validation, scoring, and documentation processes. This system aims to make the awards process more transparent, open, and efficient. The secretariat and its technical team will undertake both virtual and physical site visits after nominations close to verify information submitted by nominees.
The Energy Personality Outreach Programme, under which the Energy Personality of the preceding year engages young people and encourages them to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and careers, will also be a feature of the 2026 awards. This programme has reached more than 15,000 students through its various activities. The 2026 awards will mark the 10th anniversary of the scheme, providing an opportunity to reflect on progress made while preparing the energy sector for the next decade.
Dr. Kwame Ampofo, Ambassador to Hungary and a member of the awarding panel, spoke about Ghana's energy challenges and the need for proper planning and diversification. He cited the situation in Hungary, where drought affected the availability of water used to cool nuclear power plants, as an example of how unexpected developments could affect energy systems. Dr. Ampofo advocated for a balanced energy mix involving sources such as solar, nuclear, and thermal power.
The 10th Ghana Energy Awards will combine the recognition of outstanding industry players with activities aimed at promoting excellence, innovation, professional standards, and the development of future energy-sector leaders. The anniversary edition aims to celebrate the achievements of the past decade while encouraging greater innovation and stronger performance in Ghana's energy sector in the years ahead.
