A 20-year-old phone seller, Olusola Olumide, has been arrested and accused of crushing a police sergeant to death during a stop-and-search operation in Lagos. The incident occurred on September 26, 2026, at about 2:20 p.m., along Olugbede Street, Egbeda, Lagos State. According to a police source, Olumide's vehicle, a Lexus ES 350 with registration number FKJ 223 KX, was signaled to stop by police officers on duty.
The driver initially stopped but suddenly sped off as Sergeant Johnson Okediji approached the driver's side of the vehicle. The officer was reportedly knocked down and dragged underneath the vehicle for several meters despite repeated attempts by police officers and passers-by to make the driver stop. Olumide was eventually chased and arrested. The sergeant sustained multiple fractures and head injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
The sergeant was later referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Olumide, while narrating his account of the incident, claimed that the vehicle's brake failed and that he accidentally ran over the officer. He stated that he had taken the car to the mechanic to change the brake pad, and the mechanic had assured him that it was in good condition.
The incident was among cases recorded by the Lagos State Police Command in September as part of its enforcement operations against armed robbery, cultism, unlawful possession of firearms, and other violent crimes. The command said the operations resulted in the recovery of firearms, ammunition, stolen items, and other incriminating exhibits. A total of 43 vehicles and two vehicle keys were recovered during the operations.
The Lagos State Police Command also recovered vandalised electrical wires, N2.5 million cash, five pump-action guns, and five locally made pistols. Other items included 20 live ammunition and cartridges, 15 expended ammunition, two cutlasses, assorted suspected criminal charms, a television set, a radiator, a car jack, and a bag containing various vehicle spare parts and tools. The command had continued its enforcement against vehicles with covered number plates and unregistered vehicles.
On September 28, an early-morning enforcement operation conducted by the command led to the impoundment of more than 41 vehicles over alleged violations involving covered number plates and non-registration. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, said that on September 28, at about 4:00 p.m., police operatives on routine patrol along Oko Oba Road intercepted some suspected hoodlums who fled on sighting the officers.
Commissioner Fatai stated that 32-year-old Ojo Azeez was arrested after a hot chase, and a search of him led to the recovery of a locally made cut-to-size pistol, a radiator, a jack, an engine block, and a bag containing various vehicle spare parts and tools. The commissioner also said that an investigation was ongoing to establish the source of the recovered items and determine the suspect's involvement in other criminal activities.
