The government of Kasaï-Central province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has identified 17 erosion sites along the first 60 kilometers of the Kananga-Kalamba Mbuji road, which is currently under modernization. Provincial Governor Joseph-Moïse Kambulu made this discovery on October 31, following an inspection mission. He expressed concern that if left unchecked, these erosion sites could compromise the viability of this strategic road linking the DR Congo to Angola.
Several localities are already affected by the erosion, including Matamba, Kempe, Katshiabala, Shamatengu, and Kalenga. Governor Kambulu warned that without prompt intervention, some road sections may become impassable, undermining efforts to modernize the road. He emphasized the need for swift action, stating that all parties involved in the road's construction share responsibility for its completion.
The governor also raised concerns about the slow pace of work on the project. He urged stakeholders to accelerate the construction process to ensure the infrastructure is completed within a reasonable timeframe. The Congolese Agency for Major Works (ACGT) has assured that sufficient financial resources are available to undertake erosion control works on the most vulnerable sites.
ACGT's project monitoring chief, Serge Dibue, attributed the recent slowdown to the construction of drains, a prerequisite for asphalt laying. He reported that over 50 kilometers of the road have been completed, including 28 kilometers fully asphalted. The agency aims to finish the first 60 kilometers of the project by December 2026.
This road is a vital economic artery for trade between the DR Congo and Angola. Provincial authorities hope that accelerating the project and initiating erosion protection works will help preserve this essential infrastructure for Kasaï-Central's development. The road's modernization has been ongoing for two years, with approximately 30 kilometers already asphalted.
Local leaders have previously expressed concerns about the project's delays. Provincial deputies from Kasaï-Central have emphasized the need for timely completion of the Kananga-Kalamba Mbuji road. The project's progress is being closely monitored, with stakeholders working to address the challenges posed by erosion and ensure the road's long-term viability.
The successful completion of the Kananga-Kalamba Mbuji road is crucial for the economic growth of Kasaï-Central province and regional trade. With the ACGT's commitment to completing the project and addressing erosion concerns, authorities are optimistic about the road's potential to boost development in the region.
