The Police nationale of Burkina Faso has dismantled a network of suspected robbers operating in several areas of the country and abroad, particularly in Côte d'Ivoire. The operation, led by the Service régional de la police judiciaire du Djôrô with support from several specialized units, resulted in the arrest of 14 active members of the group and the seizure of firearms, ammunition, motorcycles, and various other items. This action was made possible through collaboration with local populations.
The gang was reportedly well-structured and organized, with each member having a clearly defined role. Their modus operandi involved identifying targets, primarily commercial areas, Orange Money shops, gold foundries, gold buyers, service stations, and other establishments likely to hold cash. Once a target was chosen, they would gather in a location to prepare their operation, determining participants and resources to mobilize.
To carry out their operations, the suspects would travel in pairs on motorcycles, wearing masks, caps, and pullovers. Upon arriving at a target location, those armed with rifles would provide security and surveillance, while others, armed with bladed weapons, would proceed to rob the victims. They would often fire warning shots to intimidate bystanders and prevent intervention, and would not hesitate to shoot victims if they resisted.
After each operation, a portion of the loot would be set aside as rental fees for the weapons, and the remainder would be divided among the members based on their level of participation. Stolen mobile phones were typically abandoned to avoid being tracked by investigators, as the group's primary goal was financial gain.
As a result of the operation, authorities seized several items, including two pump-action rifles, a hunting rifle, four automatic pistols, ammunition, bladed weapons, a vehicle, motorcycles, and household appliances. The police have thanked citizens for their collaboration in achieving this outcome and have urged them to remain vigilant and report suspicious cases to the designated green numbers.
The police have advised citizens to avoid storing large sums of money in commercial areas and to exercise increased vigilance during financial transactions or travel. They have also encouraged citizens to continue reporting suspicious cases to facilitate the fight against urban crime.
The successful operation demonstrates the commitment of the Police nationale to combating crime and ensuring public safety in Burkina Faso. The authorities have reiterated their appreciation for the support of the local population and their willingness to work together to prevent and investigate crimes.
