A 13-year-old schoolgirl from Verulam, South Africa, has been placed in temporary care while authorities investigate allegations that she was used to distribute drugs and may have been sexually exploited. The girl provided information to officers from Reaction Unit South Africa about her involvement in the distribution of drugs and her alleged sexual exploitation.
According to Mala Pather, director of the Verulam Child Welfare, the teenager was removed by the Department of Social Development on Monday and is being kept in a safe house pending investigations. Pather expressed concern about the allegations, stating that child predators are targeting extremely young children, some as young as 11 years old.
The allegations against the girl surfaced after school staff reported observing her receiving a suspicious parcel from unknown men near the school fence. The head of Reaction Unit South Africa, Prem Balram, reported the incident to the SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit last week.
During the investigation, the girl disclosed that she had been involved in the distribution of mandrax, cocaine, and rock, and had also alleged that she had been providing sexual services at local establishments and hotels. She handed over drugs found in her socks to officers and identified other persons involved, including another 11-year-old girl from the same school.
Following a meeting between officials from the Department of Social Development and members of a specialised unit from SAPS, the 13-year-old was removed from her parents' custody and transported to a medical facility for examination before being taken to a place of safety. The child's grandmother initially downplayed the incident, suggesting that the school had blown it out of proportion and that it was normal teenage behaviour.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the allegations, including the possible involvement of other persons and minors. The Department of Social Development and SAPS are working together to uncover the extent of the issue and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The incident has raised concerns about the vulnerability of children to exploitation and the need for increased vigilance and protection. According to Pather, the incident is likely "the tip of the iceberg," and it is feared that many other children may be involved in similar situations.
