On Monday, approximately 12 million Algerian students across the country's primary, middle, and high schools will begin the 2026-2027 academic year. This new school year is taking place under the guidance of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who recently emphasized the importance of optimizing the benefits and advantages gained by the education sector.
President Tebboune instructed National Education Minister Mohamed Small Saadawi to ensure that these gains are utilized effectively to achieve quality and performance. The minister has been tasked with investing in the sector's significant human resources, which have gained substantial experience since Algeria's independence.
In preparation for the new academic year, the Ministry of Housing, Urban Planning, and City Planning has handed over 289 educational facilities, including 151 primary schools, 90 middle schools, and 48 high schools. These new facilities aim to improve the learning environment for students across the country.
National Education Minister Mohamed Small Saadawi has assured that the education sector is committed to preparing carefully for the new school year, including schools damaged by recent fires in eastern and central Algeria. During a visit to Jijel province, the minister confirmed that damaged educational institutions would be ready to welcome students on Monday.
This academic year brings several pedagogical innovations, including special arrangements to support students with autism. These arrangements are the result of coordination between the Ministries of National Education and National Solidarity, aiming to ensure the effective integration and proper education of these students.
To address potential logistical challenges, several measures have been taken to guarantee the availability of textbooks in educational institutions and sales points. Over 80 million books have been made available nationwide, ensuring that students have access to the necessary materials for the new academic year.
The new school year will also see an enhancement in human resources, with successful candidates from a recent competitive exam joining the teaching staff. Meanwhile, the education sector, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, is organizing the second edition of the National School Health Week, focusing on environmental health and its impact on students' well-being.
