Rwanda has chosen 12 health projects out of 252 applications to receive support under the TRIBE-HUB Grand Challenge Fund. These initiatives aim to address some of the country's major health challenges, including maternal health, cancer, and digital health. The selection was announced during the Grand Challenge Fund Awardees' Day on October 1, attended by Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Ndayizigije Jean Marie Vianney.
The 12 successful projects represent about 4.8% of all applications received, highlighting the competitive nature of the funding programme. According to the Ministry of Health, the selected initiatives will support research and quality improvement across several priority areas, including maternal health, cancer care, digital health, and non-communicable diseases. This will help advance research and quality improvement in these areas.
The Grand Challenge Fund is part of TRIBE-HUB, an initiative aimed at strengthening Rwanda's public health system through locally led research, quality improvement, implementation science, and the translation of evidence into health-sector action. The programme brings together district hospitals, teaching and referral hospitals, universities, the Ministry of Health, and the Rwanda Biomedical Centre.
TRIBE-HUB is supported by the European Union under its Global Gateway strategy and is being implemented to strengthen research capacity, digital transformation, and evidence-based decision-making in Rwanda's health system. The programme has a budget of about €3.93 million and runs from 2024 to 2028.
The latest awards come as Rwanda continues to position research, digital technologies, and locally generated evidence as key tools for improving healthcare delivery and responding to emerging health needs. This effort aims to improve the quality, efficiency, and equity of healthcare services in the country.
The selected projects will help address some of Rwanda's key health challenges, including high maternal mortality rates and the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases. By supporting research and quality improvement initiatives, the TRIBE-HUB programme aims to contribute to better health outcomes for Rwandans.
The Ministry of Health has expressed its commitment to supporting the implementation of the selected projects, which are expected to make a positive impact on the country's health sector. The TRIBE-HUB programme is expected to play a significant role in strengthening Rwanda's public health system and improving healthcare delivery.
